Kurt Roper hits the road to see QB prospects

April 26, 2017

South Carolina offensive coordinator Kurt Roper has already seen at least one 2018 quarterback during the spring evaluation period.

This past Thursday, the Gamecocks quarterbacks coach went by Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston, S.C., where he checked in on 4-star Dakereon Joyner.

Joyner, who lists South Carolina and N.C. State as the top two teams vying for his commitment, also saw Clemson co-offensive coordinator/running backs coach Tony Elliott on Tuesday.

Though Joyner and Clemson have gone their separate ways — he wants to play quarterback and they don’t have room for another one in the 2018 class — Elliott recruits the Charleston area for the Tigers.

Plus, Joyner and Elliott share a “great relationship.”

According to the 247Sports composite, Joyner (6-2, 200) is ranked as the No. 9 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2018.

On Wednesday, Roper will be in Cincinnati, Ohio at St. Xavier High School, where he’ll see 3-star Chase Wolf. Boston College and Florida visited the school on Tuesday. Kentucky is due to stop by Friday.

The Gamecocks offered Wolf (6-2, 195) earlier this spring while he was on campus for a visit. Boston College, Cincinnati and Wisconsin are also believed to be in the mix for Wolf, who’s ranked as the No. 42 pro-style quarterback in the country.

Roper’s scheduled to head out to Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz. for a visit with 3-star Tyler Shough on May 2.

After visiting earlier this spring, Shough (6-4.5, 187) considered South Carolina to be one of his favorites, along with Indiana. His stock has been the rise ever since. Michigan offered, followed by Alabama, Missouri and Washington State. Georgia offered on Tuesday.

Shough is ranked as the No. 19 pro-style passer in the class of 2018.
