LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Kyle Davis stood in the back of a crowded cafeteria on National Signing Day and observed.
It was a chance to celebrate with seven Archer High teammates who were signing their national letters of intent. It was also another reminder that his time is coming.
"It feels like it's getting closer and closer," Davis said. "I love it."
Davis, a junior wide receiver, committed to South Carolina July 26 during the annual Gamecock Showcase camp.
He remains firmly committed to the Gamecocks seven months later, even as his recruiting stock rises and other schools continue to press for his services. The attention was there before signing day and the pace has picked up ever since.
"They keep recruiting me and keep offering," he said. "I don't have a problem with that because you never know what's going to happen. It's always good to have a backup plan."
USC, Tennessee, Auburn and NC State are recruiting him the hardest, Davis said. He visited the Tigers last month and came away impressed. Davis went to the Georgia-Kentucky basketball game on Tuesday, and a trip to the Vols is set for this weekend.
"I hear from South Carolina about every day," he said. "I'm pretty solid at the moment."
Davis is a four-star prospect and the nation's seventh-best athlete in the 2016 class, according to 247Sports' Composite rating, which factors in all networks. He had 67 catches for 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns last season. He also returned a kickoff for a score.
247Sports' Jake Rowe included Davis this month on his list of the physically strongest Georgia prospects for 2016.
"Most wide receivers aren’t going to make this list but Davis isn’t most receivers," Rowe wrote. "At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Davis is built like a linebacker right now but runs plenty well enough to stretch a defense. The South Carolina pledge is way too strong for high school defensive backs and would likely have success shoving some college defenders around, too."
One of those signing at Archer on Feb. 4 was tight end and teammate Connor Redmond. He and Davis have been friends throughout high school.
Redmond plans to work with recruiter G.A. Mangus to keep Davis on a path to USC. The future will be full of hype and hectic moments for Davis, Redmond predicted.
"He's going to see a lot but I hope he stays true to his roots and really knows what's important," Redmond said. "We talk a lot about him coming up to Columbia. Personally I think he's going to stick with USC."
Davis likely won't follow in his teammates' footsteps and be part of a 2016 National Signing Day at Archer. That's because he wants to be a January enrollee in college.
Davis was glad to be a part of Redmond's big day. And if all goes as planned, they'll both be representing the same school again at the next level.
"I'm so happy for him. It's great," Davis said. "I can't wait to be his teammate again."
