February 01, 2018
Three-star defensive tackle LaMarius Benson, who committed to South Carolina as an offensive lineman, is no longer on board with the Gamecocks.
He announced his de-commitment on Thursday morning.
“I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to experience the recruitment journey,” Benson wrote. “I would also like to thank the University of South Carolina. After talking with my family and deep prayers, I have decided to de-commit from the University of South Carolina.
“I would like to thank all the coaches at South Carolina. But I’ll like to say it was fun while it lasted.”
According to the 247Sports composite, Benson is the No. 92 defensive tackle in the Class of 2018. The 6-foot-3, 330-pound prospect from Eastside High School (Covington, Ga.) recently took an official visit to Central Florida.
Benson joins 3-star defensive tackle Dantrell Barkley as the second de-commitment from the Gamecocks 2018 class. Barkley has since signed with Charlotte.
They signed four offensive linemen in December, all of whom are rated as 3-star prospects: Maxwell Iyama (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Hank Manos (Chapin, S.C., Jovaughn Gwyn (Charlotte, N.C.) and Wyatt Campbell (Lugoff-Elgin, S.C.). Gwyn is the only one from the group who didn’t enroll in January.
South Carolina remains in the mix for 4-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.). Wonnum, who’s the younger brother of rising junior defensive end/outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum, is expected to announce a decision at some point before National Signing Day.
