LB signee Davonne Bowen flies through 100-meter dash
April 28, 2017
South Carolina linebacker signee Davonne Bowen had an impressive showing at the Region 1 5A track meet on Thursday.
Bowen, who’s listed on his 247Sports profile at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, ran a sub-11 100-meter dash. For a high school sprinter, anything that starts with 10 is really good.
There aren’t a lot of 220-something pound sprinters, much less ones running blistering times like 10.96

If you’ve been closely following along with SEC Country for the last 12 months or so, you’re probably familiar with the resident opinion on Bowen.
He has several skills that cold translate to good things for the South Carolina defense.
That was apparent last July when Bowen ran a 4.46 40-yard-dash and maxed out at 355 on the bench press. Just months earlier, at The Opening, he ran a 4.66 laser-timed 40.
The folks at 247Sports are on to something. Bowen is rated as a 4-star and ranked as the No. 16 outside linebacker in the country, according to their 2017 list.
On the 247Sports composite rankings, which ties in rankings from other outlets like Rivals and Scout, Bowen is listed as the No. 47 outside linebacker and rated as a 3-star.
The speed, strength and production on the football field make him an appealing option for coach Will Muschamp, coordinator Travaris Robinson and the rest of South Carolina’s defensive staff.
Bowen played mostly defensive end at Woodmont High School (Piedmont, S.C.) but gained some experience at linebacker as a senior, before going on to play in the Shrine Bowl.
At South Carolina, he could potentially play multiple linebacker roles, in addition to getting a look at the “Buck” spot, which is a hybrid outside linebacker/defensive position.
For a unit that’s in need of edge rushers and depth at linebacker, Bowen has a shot to make an early impact for the Gamecocks.
