LB Tra Wilkins talks Gamecocks offer
December 25, 2017
Tra Wilkins has already taken visits to Alabama and Georgia. For his next stop, he wants to head east to the Palmetto State.
“My first one, the first I want to get to is South Carolina. I want to go see South Carolina first and I’ll evaluate from there, update from there,” he said.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound outside linebacker from Lithonia (Ga.) High School lists 2019 offers from the Gamecocks and Tide, both of which rolled in earlier this month. Louisville was first.
“I felt like [offers] were going to come soon, because I’ve been working hard, but I didn’t expect for South Carolina and Alabama to come in my top three, so it was exciting,” Wilkins said.
Earlier this week, Georgia, Ohio State, Florida, Auburn and Tennessee offered.
Georgia and Georgia State hosted him for games in the fall. Earlier this month, he went to Alabama to check out a bowl practice.
“Bama, that’s cool. I went down there. … It was cool, I enjoyed it. I talked to [defensive backs] coach [Derrick] Ansley and stuff,” Wilkins said.
He added, “They practice fast. They don’t – it’s different from high school. They do this and they do that. There’s no waiting around, standing. They execute when they practice.”
South Carolina offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon relayed the news of Wilkins’ offer a day before he saw Alabama.
“I know they’re trying to rebuild. I like South Carolina, because of Jadeveon Clowney and the legacy that he left. I like that,” Wilkins said.
Wilkins, who wants to major in sports management, hopes to work around football in some capacity once his playing days are over.
“First, whichever one can help me pursue my dream and better me educational-wise and as a man, “he said. “I want to feel like I’m at home, really. And feel like if I’m able to pursue my dream.”
