LB Wendell Gregory to take two more visits before announcing the decision
SPORTSTALK / January 10, 20232024 LB Wendell Gregory (6-4 220) of Marietta, GA has set January 27th, his birthday, for his commitment announcement. Between now and then, he plans to take unofficial visits for junior days at Tennessee this coming weekend and USC January 21st. Those are two of his final five. The others are North Carolina, Auburn and Missouri.
“I’m 99% sure,” Gregory said when asked if had made his decision.
He has made multiple visits to USC going to back to camp last summer. He also visited for the spring game and for two games during the season, Georgia and Tennessee. Gamecock head coach Shane Beamer and defensive coordinator/linebacker coach Clayton White jumped on Gregory early in the recruiting process and have stayed on him hard.
“That was my first offer, so I’ve been keeping in touch with them since then, been building a big bond since last year,” Gregory said. “That’s really the big thing. Coach Beamer just got that extension to 2027, so that’s a great thing. Coach White, talk to him all the time. All those coaches, I talk to them on a daily basis. I’ve really bonded with the coaches. I’ve communicated with the coaches and some of the ’24s that’s thinking about going there.”
Gregory also got the chance to see the Gamecocks in bowl practice in December.
“They took me on a tour of the whole school. Took me on a tour of the dorms,” he said. “I just like how the coaches interact with the kids and how they treat each other. They treat each other how they want to be treated. Coaches are no different than the kids.”
From his conversations with White, Gregory said he’s gotten a good read on how he would be used in their defense should he choose the Gamecocks.
“They like how I’m a viper,” Gregory said. “I can play off the edge. I can play in coverage. I can get you a sack. They are going to put me in a defense they know I can play.”
