People do not realize how much this guy influenced entertainmentin the second half of the last century.
I mean, he did albums for the Beatles and Rolling Stones - and the Ramones. He was even a producer for the biggest martial arts movie of all time - Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee.
Like a lot of very talented people, the genius came with the craziness.
I was really thinking about the legacy vs person subject just a day or two ago while watching One Night in Miami. One of the characters in the film is Sam Cooke and I had forgot the circumstances of his death. He and Jim Brown has some very troubling charges and accusations that took place at the height of their powers and these darker parts of them have mostly been pushed to the margins. I wonder if time will be kinder to Specter’s legacy but I doubt it. The reason is that, as you mention, his influence and innovation is forgotten and taken for granted in the effects it had on music for generations after.
He was a revolutionary and innovative producer for sure. Unfortunately I feel the latter part of his personal life will over shadow those accomplishments and honestly, I totally understand why.
It is the same with Robert Blake, Bob Crane, Rick James - people remember the craziness even after they forget what made the people famous in the first place.
