Three-star linebacker Jalen Henry 6'0" 219lbs (Foley, Ala./Foley) wrapped up his official visit on Sunday, just more than a month before he’s set to be in Columbia full-time. Henry is set to enroll early and begin classes on January 12 and this weekend was his first taste of what life would be like living in Columbia.
Henry spent most of the trip with linebackers coach Kirk Botkin, his recruiter of record and position coach, as well as defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth, who was his host.
“The visit went really well,” Henry said. “Just trying to figure out things, where I’ll be going for class. They showed me around, the things I’d be doing and where I’d workout. I really felt good down here. Taylor Stallworth and Coach Botkin really made me feel comfortable around here.”
Stallworth is from the same neck of the woods as Henry and the two hit it off.
“I didn’t know him at all before the visit,” Henry said. “I knew he was from my area and I saw him play on television in an all-star game. I had a great time going to the dorms and hanging out with the other freshman. We all hit it off really well.”
Henry also spent a chunk of the day on Saturday with head coach Steve Spurrier. The two met at the stadium and the three-star linebacker said he had an immediate bond with the Head Ball Coach.
“It made me feel comfortable and made me feel good,” Henry said, reacting to the news that Spurrier will be back for 2-3 more years. “I wouldn’t know how to take it if a new coach came in this year. I have a little bit of a bond with Coach Spurrier. We sat and had a good talk yesterday. We talked about the past year, how we struggled and how my class will help break us out of it.”
Henry said the coaching staff told him he’d begin his career at weakside linebacker but they also mentioned the SPUR position as well.
Henry’s team advanced to the AAAAAAA semi-finals this season in its first year after moving up to that classification. Henry said he won’t know until next week what his final stats were for the season, but he was happy with the way he played and how the season finished for Foley High School.
“I played pretty good, especially after having a couple injuries during the year,” Henry said. “I pushed on past them. I hurt my knee at the end of the year, but I’m all good now. I’m satisfied with where we finished though.”
