Looking ahead: South Carolina’s priority recruits for the 2018 class

With 17 commitments already in place, only eight spots are open in South Carolina’s 2017 signing class.
The Gamecocks class is almost full, and we’re still over seven months from signing day There is, however, plenty of room left in the 2018 haul.
Coach Will Muschamp has already offered several rising junior prospects, many of whom are from the Palmetto State. That’s no surprise, considering the amount of in-state talent in next year’s class and Muschamp’s enthusiasm for recruiting state of South Carolina.
A number of the top targets on the Gamecocks 2018 recruiting board hail from South Carolina. According to SEC Country, the following prospects are labeled as priorities for Muschamp in 2018.
In-state d-linemen
From Robert Quinn and Carlos Dunlap to Jadeveon Clowney and Shaq Lawson, the state of South Carolina has produced its fair share of defensive linemen over the years. Led by 5-star DE Xavier Thomas (Florence), 5-star DT Josh Belk (Richburg) and 4-star DE Stephon Wynn (Anderson), there are plenty more up for grabs in 2018.
All three camped at South Carolina earlier earlier this month. Thomas visited with several teammates from Wilson High School. Belk, who’s from Lewisville High School, was joined by a couple of other prospects from the I-77 corridor. Wynn, the son of a former Clemson tight end, returned from TL Hanna High School for the first session of the linemen camp.
The chase for Thomas figures to be an in-state battle between South Carolina and Clemson. According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Belk is pegged for South Carolina. TheCrystal Ball has Wynn bound for Clemson.
In-state wide receivers
Shi Smith, the highest rated in-state wide receiver for 2017, is committed to South Carolina. The Gamecocks remain in pursuit of 4-star ATH OrTre Smith, who’s being recruited to join the rebuilding wide receivers corps in Columbia.
South Carolina has already offered four 2018 wide receivers from the Palmetto State. Blythewood’s Jordyn Adams was first, followed by Greenwood’s Sam Pinckney. Jacoby Pinckney and Demarcus Gregory landed offers in June.
Adams is the son of former South Carolina defensive line coach Deke Adams, who’s now an assistant at East Carolina. Maryland and North Carolina have also offered.
South Carolina offered Sam Pinckney in May and the Gamecocks remain his only offer. Jacoby Pinckney, who’s from Dorman High School (Roebuck), was offered after he put together a strong camp showing. Gregory, the latest pass catcher from Byrnes High School (Duncan), landed his offer at the first on-campus 7-on-7 event.
None of the four have been offered by archival Clemson.
Georgia’s o-linemen
The state of Georgia regularly churns out 4-star offensive linemen. The 2018 haul is no different, and a few are keeping South Carolina under consideration, including Warner Robins’ Christian Armstrong and Stephenson High School’s (Stone Mountain) Dylan Wonnum.
Armstrong, the No. 10 ranked tackle, according to 247Sports, attended Muschamp’s camp with his father and was offered by the Gamecocks. Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Tennessee have also offered.
Wonnum, the No. 7 ranked guard, is the younger brother of D.J. Wonnum, who’s a freshman defensive end at South Carolina. The younger Wonnum has offers from Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri and Tennessee.
And, of course, there’s North Gwinnett OT Warren Ericson, who has several SEC offers, including South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Ericson also attended the linemen camp.
