Looking ahead to 2019 wide receivers
September 15, 2017
South Carolina doesn’t have any scholarship senior wide receivers on the current roster, though there are two redshirt juniors: Deebo Samuel and Terry Googer. Aside from redshirt sophomore Jerad Washington, the other six players at the position were signed by coach Will Muschamp during his first two recruiting cycles with the Gamecocks.
The 2018 class is full with 2018 commitments: 4-star prospect Josh Vann (Tucker, Ga.) and 3-star recruits Darius Rush (Kingstree, S.C.), Ronnie Jamison (Irmo, S.C.) and Tyquan Johnson (Sylvania, Ga.).
There is still quite some time before South Carolina’s 2019 class is ready to be signed sealed and delivered, so the wide receiver roster could look significantly different by then.
An early SEC Country projection has South Carolina signing 2-3 wide receivers during the 2019 cycle.
South Carolina recruiting targets
South Carolina’s coaches have dispensed offers to more than 20 wide receivers from the Class of 2019, a few of whom are already committed to other schools.
Georgia pledge Jadon Haselwood, the No. 1 wide receiver in the country, visited South Carolina in April for the spring game. The 5-star prospect from Cedar Grove High School (Ellenwood, Ga.) went to Clemson last weekend.
Fellow 5-star prospect Jashawn Sheffield, who’s not committed, visited South Carolina with his teammates from Frederica Academy (Saint Simons Island, Ga.) for a 7-on-7 tournament this past summer.
Obviously, those blue-chip prospects are highly coveted by some of the country’s top programs, but it doesn’t hurt to cast a wide net.
More than 10 of South Carolina’s 2019 wide receiver offers are 4-star prospects, including in-state prospects Jamario Holley (Rock Hill-Northwestern) and Jacoby Pinckney (Roebuck-Dorman). Three-star talent Quendarius Jefferson (Simpsonville-Hillcrest) also lists an offer.
Nolan Groulx, a 6-foot, 185-pound 3-star recruit from Cornelius, N.C., will visit South Carolina on Saturday for the Kentucky game. Duke, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, West Virginia and Wisconsin have also offered. Among those who have offered, the Gamecocks hold an early lead on the field.
