Looking ahead to running backs for 2019
August 29, 2017
The roster
Not only is South Carolina’s running back roster deep, but it’s young. There won’t be any scholarship seniors until 2019. Assuming there’s no attrition over the next 12 months, here’s what the group will look like for the 2018 season:
The 5-star offer
South Carolina is one of many offers for 5-star running back Quavaris Crouch, the No. 18 overall prospect in the Class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite.
Crouch, a 6-foot-2, 224-pound prospect from Harding University High School in Charlotte, N.C., has plenty of big-time offers, including Alabama, Clemson and Michigan.
South Carolina has some staying power, thanks to some early groundwork by running backs coach Bobby Bentley, who recruits the Charlotte area.
A few 4-star players
A handful of 4-star prospects have landed an offer from the Gamecocks, including Devyn Ford (Stafford, Va.), Derrian Brown (Buford, Ga.) and Jonathan Sewell (Athens, Ga.).
South Carolina probably won’t be a factor for Ford, but Brown and Sewell have both been on campus in Columbia.
The rest
Several of the names from “the rest” could one day land 4-star billing, including Syheam McQueen, who shares a backfield with 2018 5-star recruit Zamir White, who’s committed to Georgia.
McQueen, the other back from Scotland County (N.C.) High School, has offers from South Carolina and North Carolina State.
Michel Dukes has an early stake to the claim as top in-state running back for 2019. The 5-10, 191-pound 3-star recruit is out of First Baptist School in Charleston, S.C. In addition to South Carolina, North Carolina and Wake Forest have also offered.
Knowledge McDaniel is another 2019 running back with a backfield mate who’s committed to play in the SEC. Deshaun Fenwick, McDaniel’s teammate from Braden River (Fla.) High School, is committed to the Gamecocks.
Though he’s listed as a 3-star athlete, Aidan Robbins was offered by Bentley as a running back. The 6-3, 205-pound prospect from Louisville, Ky., visited the Gamecocks during the summer.
