Looking ahead to the Gamecocks QB targets

August 22, 2017

The roster

Assuming South Carolina doesn’t sign two quarterbacks in the 2018 recruiting cycle, next season’s roster will once again have four scholarship players at the position.

  • RS Senior Michael Scarnecchia
  • Junior Jake Bentley
  • Sophomore/RS Freshman Jay Urich
  • Freshman Dakereon Joyner
With Scarnecchia set to be off the books by the time the 2019 class arrives to Columbia, South Carolina should sign at least one quarterback during the cycle. Given the low numbers at the position — right now — it might be in the Gamecocks best interest to go after two during the 2019 cycle.

Below are a few of the names to know.

704 targets

According to SEC Country’s unofficial count, 4-star Garrett Shrader was the first 2019 quarterback to land an offer from South Carolina.

Sharader, the No. 6 pro-style quarterback in the class, according to the 247Sports composite, has a strong early offer list, which includes Alabama, Louisville, Penn State and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-4.5, 200-pound prospect, who attends Charlotte (N.C.) Christian School, was offered by the Gamecocks after an impressive performance at the Will Muschamp Football Camp in June.

There’s another 4-star quarterback about 30 minutes southeast of Charlotte in the City of Monroe, which is home to Sun Valley High School’s Sam Howell.

Howell (6-1, 200) is the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in 2019. He hasn’t been offered by South Carolina yet, but lists tenders from Duke, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Tennessee.

A pair of quarterbacks from the Upstate are under evaluation by South Carolina co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper.

Greenville (S.C.) High School’s Davis Beville (6-5, 200) has an offer from Campbell.

Down the road at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson is Alex Meredith, a 6-foot, 180-pound prospect with offers from Coastal Carolina and Wofford.

The rest

Three-star Charlie Dean, the No. 14 pro-style quarterback, according to 247Sports, camped at South Carolina in June. Dean, a 6-foot-1, 197-pound prospect from Tampa (Fla.) Catholic, holds offers from Northern Iowa and Toledo.

Like Dean, 3-star Chandler Fields threw on campus for Roper earlier this summer. Fields (5-11, 182) is out of Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie, La. Memphis has offered the No. 12 dual-threat quarterback.

Also keep an eye on Jordan Yates, the No. 17 dual-threat quarterback, according to the 247Sports composite. Austin Peay and Florida Atlantic are listed as offers by the 6-foot-1, 186-pound prospect from Milton High School in Alpharetta, Ga.
