South Carolina's recruitment of 4 star quarterback Lorenzo Nunez 6-foot-3, 195-pound (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) has picked up considerably in the last month or so, and the four-star quarterback got the opportunity to check out the program for the first time this weekend.
Nunez arrived in Columbia Friday and took in the Gamecocks' baseball win that night before taking in the Garnet and Black spring game on Saturday.
"It was nice, I liked it a lot," Nunez said. "Coach (G.A.) Mangus showed me around the place. It's a real pretty campus. I liked it. I liked the big resort, the pool and beach area (Strom Thurmond Fitness center) they have on campus. It was nice. The stadium, I liked it a lot, and the fans,"
Mangus, the Gamecocks' quarterbacks coach, is recruiting Nunez and offered on March 28.
"It was my first time seeing him," Nunez said. "I've talked to him on the phone before this. He's a cool guy. I like him a lot. I think we'll build on the relationship even more and I'll probably get back up here for another visit in the near future." Said Mangus discussed with him the possibility of playing early.
"The thing they like about my game is that I can extend the play, like Connor Shaw did the past few years," Nunez said. "They said that I have a good chance of coming in and starting my freshman year or sophomore year after (Dylan) Thompson leaves next year."
The nation's No. 8 dual-threat quarterbacks paid special attention to the Gamecocks' offense during the game.
"I think it fits me well," Nunez said. "It was kind of slow today, because it was the spring game and they can't really go full speed and hit everybody. It was cool. I think I fit their offense well."
Nunez, who is the No. 169 overall prospect in the country, says his top group consists of six schools, in no particular order: South Carolina, N.C. State, Ohio State, Tennessee, Clemson and Miami
"I think I'm going to visit one or two more schools after this and then make my decision from that," Nunez said. "Probably [will decide] after the spring, unless something changes."
Nunez says Ohio State, Tennessee, Clemson and N.C. State are the schools he's considering for the final trip or two.
Did this weekend's trip help South Carolina?
"It helped them a lot, my first time seeing the campus and everything and a game, it really helps, since I hadn't been there before," Nunez said.
