Low-key defensive back Jaylin Dickerson could be impact addition for South Carolina

June 21, 2016

News of Jaylin Dickerson’s decision to commit to South Carolina broke the old-fashioned way.

The 3-star safety from Pinecrest High School (Southern Pines, N.C.) took the road less traveled, when he decided Saturday to commit to South Carolina.

There wasn’t a tweet, not even a collection of hats to choose from. Definitely not a video.

Instead, Wes Mitchell of GamecockCentral was first to report the news that Dickerson committed to South Carolina.

Afterwards, in an interview with Phil Kornblut of sportstalksc.com, Dickerson said making a splash isn’t his style.

“That’s the thing with me, I’m good with it but I don’t like all the publicity,” Dickerson said.  “I like to play football, do what I love and be around my family.”

The Twitter handle @JaylinDickerson was created in March of 2012. With just more than 1,000 tweets and 927 followers, there’s no mention of a commitment to South Carolina, much less anything that would suggest Dickerson is a college football recruit.

But he is. The 6-foot, 174-pound safety committed to  South Carolina over offers from Virginia, Appalachian State, Charlotte and East Carolina.

Pinecrest coach Chris Metzger said the Gamecocks landed more than just a good football player.

“South Carolina is getting one of the better human beings I have ever coached,” Metzger said. “He is a salt of the earth kind of guy, tremendous teammate, just a guy that is a student of the game.

“He’s tough as nails, really loves the game. I think the biggest thing about him is he’s only going to get better … the best is yet to come.”

Off the field, Dickerson is serious about his faith. That, according to Metzger, played a big part in helping him reach the decision.

“He’s a Godly kid, a prayerful kid. He prayed on it and felt like that’s where he wanted to be,” Metzger said. “He enjoyed his time with (Will) Muschamp and (Travaris) Robinson, coach T-Rob. (Dickerson) just wanted to finish it up.”

On the field, Dickerson is just as passionate.

“Tremendous ball skills, very explosive athlete, physical, has a great awareness of what people are doing. And he just really loves playing the game. You can tell he genuinely enjoys it,” Metzger said.

Dickerson is rated as the No. 30 player in North Carolina, and the second player from the state to commit to the Gamecocks in this recruiting cycle. With 16 pledges, South Carolina is tied with Mississippi State for the second-most in the SEC behind Tennessee’s 18.

South Carolina’s staff let Dickerson know they were excited about adding him to their 2017 class.

“Coach Robinson was happy. Oh, my goodness, it sounded like he was jumping out of his seat,”

Dickerson said. “I guess they had a 7-on-7 (Saturday) … he had to go find Coach Muschamp. He sounded like he was excited, very excited.”
