Last Thursday, Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School quarterback Luke Doty added another offer to an already strong list of suitors, which includes South Carolina, Louisville, Miami and North Carolina.
Auburn’s offer brings Doty’s total to 15. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2020. He’s listed as the sixth-best overall prospect from South Carolina in what’s already shaping up to be an impressive class.
South Carolina is expected to have Doty back on campus in June for camp. Quarterbacks coach Dan Werner spoke with him as recently as Wednesday.
Last month, Doty told SEC Country that Werner is consistent with his message.
“It’s always, I’m their guy and they’re going to come after me hard, because I’m an in-state guy,” Doty said. “[Werner] said that I’m at the top of the list right now, and we’re looking to keep it that way.”
Talking Ohio State
South Carolina’s 2019 quarterback commitment, 4-star Ryan Hilinski (Orange, Calif.), recently landed an offer from Ohio State. Hilinski, who’s firm in his pledge to the Gamecocks, recently spoke with Eleven Warriors about the Buckeyes offer.
“It’s a big offer for me, especially coming from Coach [Urban] Meyer,” Hilinski said. “He recognizes great talent and he’s coached a lot of it. Getting an offer from them solidifies all of the hard work I’ve been putting in this offseason. It’s a big honor for me, for sure.”
Could a visit be in the works? Maybe.
“I’m still trying to see if I should,” Hilinski said. “I want to talk to the coaches and see where we’re at. Based off those [conversations], we’ll see if I can visit Ohio State or not.”
Reactions from the road
Former Clemson defensive tackle Josh Belk visited South Carolina and Georgia last week. The one-time 4-star recruit from Lewisville High School (Richburg, S.C.) is expected to have to sit out the 2018 season, after reporting to the Tigers in January and going through spring practice.
Belk spoke with SportsTalkSC’s Phil Kornblut after each of the two visits to the SEC East schools.
“It was like, the relationship hasn’t changed,” Belk said of the trip to South Carolina. “They still welcomed me in like it was the beginning of the recruiting process. Just talked to Coach [Will] Muschamp and he showed me the new facility they are building and told me about how I can help the team out and how good of a player I can be.”
Georgia coach Kirby Smart expressed a lot of interest while Belk was on campus Thursday, a day after the trip to South Carolina.
“[Smart] really wants me. They signed two defensive tackles within the last two years,” Belk said. “With me coming in, and they play like some three-gap, four-gap defense, with my versatility I can play any of those positions down there. I can change my positions on the spot and still be as effective at one position as any other one.”
