Mangus in New Jersey (Madden info)
Jan. 21, 2015
Here's what went down with Sam Madden....
Monday night, USC and the Madden family agreed with recruiter G.A. Mangus that Madden would take an official visit to South Carolina this weekend. The flight was booked for Sam and his father, who per NCAA rules has to pay for his own flight, was going to book his on his own.
Offensive Line coach Shawn Elliott spoke with Madden at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Georgia's new offensive line coach Rob Sale also called and already had a plane ticket booked for Sam and the family elected to visit Georgia this weekend, backing out on the South Carolina visit.
It was a choice that Madden and the father made and had nothing to do with the Gamecocks calling or not calling or not coming in as hard as Georgia. This was not a scenario where USC dropped the ball.
Today, Mangus is in New Jersey and will make an in-home with Madden. I anticipate that Madden will set up an official visit for the following weekend. If that does not happen relatively soon, I think you can cross him off the list.
Mangus is the only coach that will be in the home this week. USC will be up to see him next week as well.
Sometimes when a prospect gets a lot of attention right here at crunch time, it overwhelms the people involved and things change quickly, then settle down.
Mangus visiting today is an efffort on South Carolina's part to settle things down a bit and make sure he comes in next weekend. Mangus was originally scheduled to be elsewhere.
I am told that a Jan. 30 visit, when there is a home basketball game and New Jersey 2016 and 2017 prospects on campus, is actually preferable to the USC staff with regards to Madden.
