Injuries happen in football. They are as common as the running play, but the severity can vary greatly. Unfortunately for Marcus Lattimore, he will soon be battling back from his second straight season-ending injury.
As reports of another lengthy rehab started to set in for the young Gamecocks running back, news began to break that a rally was being held on campus to show support for the injured Lattimore. A Yahoo! report quotes GamecocksCentral.com stating that an estimated 3,000 people showed up for the celebration.
This rally shows the strong bond that has been built between this community, the Gamecocks team and Marcus Lattimore.
Lattimore has been a big part of the Gamecocks community since he signed with South Carolina in 2010. One of the best running backs in the country decided to stay home to play football and his community was very thankful for that decision.
There have been no incidents with police or on campus that has made the news with Lattimore’s name attached. He has been a great player, but also a great role model for the Gamecocks team and fans.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley announced that Monday was “Marcus Lattimore Day” in the state in honor of the young running back. When making the announcement, the Governor had this to say about Lattimore:
Michael and I ask every South Carolinian to join our family as we lift up in prayer Marcus Lattimore and his mother Yolanda Smith during this challenging time. He has been more than just a Carolina football player—he is a great role model for our state.
This is a situation that no one wants to face, but there is no better player to face this type of adversity than Lattimore.
He has a quiet approach to interviews, but he is a vocal leader for the Gamecocks team. His work ethic and tough running style inspire his teammates to push their own limits and sell out for the program on every down.
Lattimore will return to the Carolina football team. He will rehab and will play the game just as passionately as he did prior to this injury.
