Marcus Lattimore only touched the ball eight times in the first half of the Kentucky game Saturday night. Each of the past two weeks, the Gamecock offense has been stuffed on the one yard line without the school’s all-time leading touchdown maker getting a carry.

At halftime, with Kentucky leading 17-7 a lot of people were wondering why in the heck number 21 wasn’t getting the rock. Some people were puzzled. Some people were frustrated. Some people were puzzled and frustrated.

Marcus Lattimore was not one of those people.

“I just wait til my number is called,” Lattimore said after the game. “I mean I’m coached by Steve Spurrier. You know, six SEC Championships one national championship. He knows what he doing. I will never question his play calling, never question any of the coaches because we have a great staff.”

Marcus Lattimore post UK [2:17]

A lot of players say things like that because they are supposed to. Not Lattimore. He means it. If not, he’s a better actor than he is a football player.

There are some guys out there with talent like Marcus Lattimore, probably not very many, but certainly some. However it hard to believe there are many, if any, that have the selfless team first positive attitude.

Lattimore finished with 120 yards on 23 carries in Saturday night’s win over Kentucky. He’s rushed for over 100 yards 10 times in his Gamecock career, twice this season. He’s moved into the top eight all-time in rushing and no one in school history has scored more touchdowns (38) than he has.

Those are remarkable numbers. But none of those numbers come close to measuring the impact Lattimore has had on the Gamecock program off the field and in the locker room and at the podium as the face of the program. No one has carried a bigger load on or off the field than Lattimore. And no one has done it better.
