Martin has program legend English in his corner

Dec. 07, 2019

Before the likes of BJ McKie or Sindarius Thornwell, the player synonymous with South Carolina basketball was – and in the minds of many still is – Alex English.

The 6-7 forward from Columbia who played for South Carolina from 1972-76 and was a two-time All-American went on to have an illustrious 14-year NBA career and currently ranks No. 19 in league history with 25,613 career points. He was the 1983 scoring champion and an 8-time NBA All-Star. His No. 22 is retired at South Carolina and No. 2 is retired by the Denver Nuggets. (VIEW ARTICLE) Free 247sports

Back when I was just in Middle School watching English, Dunleavy, Joyce, and Winters blowing opponents away it was awesome. They made me dream of playing for Carolina one day. Sadly, being 6'3" at small 2A schools I was always a Forward. Never really got used to shooting outside so I was not really a candidate to play guard and 6'3" was too short to be a college Forward. By the time I graduated HS Bill Foster was at Carolina. He gently told me not to try out. He said I had been scouted but they really did not see me making the transition. So I decided to go be WR on the football team like I was in HS. I could run fast and jump. They kinda also said no thanks. As bad as I wanted, I just did not have the talent for college sports. So I quit school and joined the Navy.

Either way, Alex English had tremendous talent and if he is there at practice he could be a huge benefit. Can't wait to see them in those uniforms again.

Finally... Some one who actually played at USC participating in our Athletics Dept. I never understood why we don't recruit coaches that actually played at USC.
