Butler resets decision timeline
On Sunday, about 24 hours after Matthew Butler wrapped up his third trip to Columbia, S.C., the 3-star defensive end from Garner (N.C.) High School told SEC Country that he was no longer eyeing an in-season announcement.
The 2017 prospect doesn’t want his decision to become a distraction. Not for him. Not for his teammates. Not for his coaches.
Plus, Butler isn’t quite ready to make up his mind.
“When I commit, I just want to be 100 percent and be the biggest fan of that school,” he said.
Butler plans to announce at the conclusion of his senior season. In the meantime, he’ll continue to evaluate his options, which include South Carolina.
“I enjoyed everything. I got to see what coach (Will) Muschamp and (defensive line) coach (Lance) Thompson were talking about when they were (discussing) how they’re going to utilize me and where I’m needed and what I can do for the defense,” Butler said. “I got to see it up close and personal.”
He added, “I got to talk briefly with some players and see the atmosphere of the game and see how passionate South Carolina fans are. Everything was quite enjoyable.”
Up next for Butler is an unofficial visit to N.C. State for the Notre Dame game this Saturday. Penn State and Duke hosted him for games earlier this season.
This season, Butler has approximately 20-25 tackles for losses and 12 sacks.
According to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Butler is ranked as the No. 27 strong-side defensive end in the country.
2018 TE has connection to South Carolina
South Carolina tight end Hayden Hurst played his high school ball at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla. About 30 minutes down the road is Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, where his father is an administrator.
Nease also is home to 2018 tight end Zach Sheffer, who visited South Carolina on Saturday for the Texas A&M game.
“It was pretty cool. We got in the night before and got to sleep in a little bit before the game, so that was nice. I loved it,” Sheffer said. “It was a great atmosphere. The fans were awesome and then I just really liked how they used the tight ends.”
Sheffer watched as Hurst caught 5 passes for 90 yards.
“I was just asking (Hurst) about it and he was saying we’re definitely going to use you if you come and how I would have a great experience there,” Sheffer said.
Though the Gamecocks lost 24-13, Sheffer said the coaches “seemed like they really want me to come (to South Carolina).
“I’m happy to see that,” he said.
Sheffer is the No. 15-ranked tight end in the Class of 2018.
