McLeod takes the Gamecocks Welcome-Home approach to heart
SPORTSTALK / January 24, 2022
USC has not yet logged that first public commitment for the 2023 class, but Camden DT Xzavier McLeod (6-5 320) sounds like a strong candidate to be that guy. The highly regarded McLeod made his latest visit with the Gamecocks Saturday for their junior day. Shane Beamer has made the Twitter hashtag Welcome-Home synonymous with all facets of his young program. McLeod got the full meaning of that on his visit.
“It was a great trip actually,” McLeod said. “Nothing out of the ordinary. It’s just real good being home again. When I went over there, it’s basically me coming to my actual house. That’s how they make me feel when I come there.”
McLeod spent quality time with Beamer as well as defensive staff members Jimmy Lindsey, Sterling Lucas and Shaq Wilson. They laid out for him again what he will find if he makes USC his future home.
“They just were basically going over the same thing talking about how I can fit into their schemes,” McLeod said. “I’m a really important piece to their puzzle for the ’23 class. They said they are really trying to offer one guy and they want that one guy to be me. They are really emphasizing me being the best player and basically, I need to get there so they can go ahead and kickoff the ’23 class.”
That’s some heavy stuff to put on a recruit, but McLeod was more than happy to hear it.
“My message to them was I’m all ears,” he said. “I listened to everything they had to say, and I felt as if what they were saying was true, and I feel like I am a big part of their class. When they say that, that makes me feel welcomed and wanted, like they actually have a mission and I’m the key to the puzzle to finish that mission. I feel great.”
McLeod said he’s expecting several recruiters to visit him at Camden High this week. This weekend he’s contemplating taking another visit, but he’s not certain where. He said possibilities are Clemson, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and North Carolina.
