Miami recruits enjoy overnight stay at South Carolina

June 03, 2016

A group of prospects from Miami spent parts of the last two days on South Carolina’s campus.

Before the travelling party left, a pair of teammates from Miami Carol City Senior High School picked up offers from the Gamecocks: 2017 safety Donelle Thomas and 2018 safety Randy Russell.

Their teammate, 2017 safety Naytron Culpepper, was the only member of the group who arrived to Columbia with a South Carolina offer.

“It was great. I had fun (and) I was very well taken care of by everyone,” he said.

Culpepper, a three-star who’s listed as the No. 38 safety in the class of 2017, sees an opportunity for early playing time at South Carolina. The Gamecocks’ defensive brain-trust of coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson has also caught his eye.

South Carolina is in strong position, sitting at the “top of my list with some others,” Culpepper said.
Tennessee, Michigan State, Utah, Arkansas, LSU and Oregon State were listed as the others.
Russell gave the trip high marks.

“The visit made me feel as if I never left home,” he said.
Listed at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, Russell offer sheet includes Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State, Pittsburgh and UCF.
“Having that (South Carolina) offer means a lot,” he said. “Visiting made it much better, getting a chance to see and talk to the coaches and players.”

Thomas (5-11, 175) arrived with offers from Appalachian State, East Carolina and Syracuse.

“It’s very exciting. I really enjoyed the campus,” he said. “Playing in the SEC was my goal growing up.”

The group is scheduled to visit Auburn on Saturday, before heading to Georgia Tech and Georgia State on Sunday.
