Mining the state of Florida for defensive backs
November 02, 2017
“How big of an impact do you think the visit the two corner prospects from Florida made, especially since UF has a vacancy?” — Arthur Williams
The two cornerback prospects in question are Divaad Wilson and Asante Samuel Jr., both of whom were in town this past weekend as official visitors for the Vanderbilt game.
We’ll start with Samuel, a 4-star from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale who’s committed to Florida State. Samuel is friends with South Carolina defensive back Chris Lammons, a South Florida guy who’s having a really good senior season under Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson.
Even though Lammons won’t be here next year, there’s could be a degree of influence there, given the success he’s enjoyed under the Gamecocks coaches. In general, that stuff means a lot to prospects, and it’s probably safe to assume that it’s helped pique Samuel’s interest in South Carolina.
Wilson, a Florida commitment from Northwestern High School in Miami, is friends with South Carolina defensive lineman Keir Thomas, who served as his player host for the weekend. Thomas’ success this season – he certainly played well against Vanderbilt – works in South Carolina’s favor for Wilson, even though they’re at much different positions.
As Wilson was exiting Columbia on Sunday, word came down about Florida coach Jim McElwain, so the 3-star cornerback wasn’t too talkative when speaking to SEC Country later that night, but he did indicate that other schools will receive official visits, including Florida, Georgia and Louisville.
It’s probably going to be a little while before we see either prospect reach a final decision.
