South Carolina came through the annual Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft almost exactly as expected.
But the "exactly" turned out to be very good news.
While USC surprisingly had recruit Ryan Ripken, the son of Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken Jr., selected in the 20th round, it still stands to get him to school (and since Ripken is unlikely to be a key contributor right away, it wouldn't hurt too badly if he was lost). The Gamecocks also got great news about juniors Colby Holmes, Tyler Webb and LB Dantzler - none were drafted, ensuring their return in 2013.
The only others selected on Wednesday were senior Adam Matthews and recruits Dixon Llorens and Max Schrock. Schrock confirmed via text message on Tuesday that he had pulled his name out of the draft. While it obviously didn't bar teams from picking him, he made his intentions clear that he really wanted to come to school and if he wasn't a first- or second-round pick, he was going to come to school. He's playing summer-league ball in Ohio and will be at USC in the fall.
Llorens and Ripken might be a bit of a wait-and-see, but at least on Wednesday, each was expected to come to school. Over the entire scope of the draft, USC had several players it expected to lose get drafted, and with three of the players already signing pro contracts, it won't be nearly as much of a dragged-out process as it has been in years past.
Matthews fell six rounds from his selection last year, but was drafted in the 29th round by Cincinnati. One of the Gamecocks' three captains, Matthews wants to continue going out on top - he was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Columbia Regional and has a Super Regional to play this weekend.
