More on 5-star KJ Henry; what Jonathan Gipson’s commitment means

August 01, 2017

5-star talk

Five-star defensive end KJ Henry spoke about Alabama, Clemson, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and Georgia — in that order — with CBS affiliate WFMY on Monday, after practice at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, N.C.

The No. 2 overall recruit in North Carolina will graduate in December.

“I’ve been talking to coach [Will] Muschamp. Out of this whole recruiting process, I talk to the head coach the most with South Carolina, and so to have a head coach to talk just to me, that’s means a big deal,” Henry said.

“That means I’m a priority for their recruiting and I know, Day 1 — they have players, great players — but at the same time, from my abilities, my work ethic and the things that they can teach me, I can probably get some good playing time in my freshman year.”

Henry is expected to announce a commitment in December to one of the schools in his top 5.

The player

There’s a lot to like about Jonathan Gipson’s highlights from his junior season in high school. Whoever pieced the 5:51 video together did a fine job, but Gipson did his part, supplying plenty of clips doing a variety of things, though primarily from the cornerback position.

However, his potential landing spot at South Carolina could be at free safety, which would pair well with 3-star safety commit R.J. Roderick, who profiles as a strong safety.

The first thing that jumps out on Gipson’s highlights is his physicality, even though the first clip shows him making an interception. If you make it through the first 55 seconds you’ve hit the really good stuff. But there’s plenty more to see. Gipson had 14 pass breakups and 5 interceptions as a junior at Mill Creek High School (Hoschton, Ga.).

At his size (6-foot-1, 183 pounds), Gipson is well on his way to growing into a safety, but he’s got good enough coverage skills to warrant consideration as a cornerback. His most recent Nike SPARQ numbers show a time of 4.62 seconds in the 40-yard-dash.

Rankings for South Carolina

South Carolina continues to climb up the 247Sports composite rankings for the Class of 2018. Thanks to the commitment by Gipson, the Gamecocks have vaulted inside the top 25.

Their point total of 182.84 puts them at No. 23 in the country, snuggled between Nebraska (25) and Maryland (22). South Carolina holds firm in the seventh spot among SEC teams, flanked by Vanderbilt (eighth) and Mississippi State (sixth).

Nationally, Rivals has South Carolina one spot higher than the 247Sports composite, but its standing in the SEC is the same. The 247Sports rankings list the Gamecocks at No. 26 in the country.

Looking forward to this guy to join us
