More on Dax Hollifield; the official visitors in Columbia

September 25, 2017

South Carolina recruiting unofficial visit

Four-star linebacker Dax Hollifield had just one issue with his visit to South Carolina for the Kentucky game.

“I loved it. We got there right at kickoff and it was packed,” he said. “I got there a little late. … All they had left was macaroni and cheese and ate about three plates of that. Other than that, it was a great visit. I enjoyed it. I got to talk to all of the coaches.”

That includes coach Will Muschamp, who’s zeroed in on the prospect from Shelby (N.C.) High School.

“Playing early. Basically, that’s all it is. That’s his message every time,” Hollifield said. “He’s not really trying to put the recruiting pitch on me. He’s just asking how I am, trying to build a relationship with me, stuff like that.”

Apparently, Muschamp is working harder for Hollifield than Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente, North Carolina’s Larry Fedora, Stanford’s David Shaw and Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher.

“He texts every day,” Hollifield said. “They send me — all their staff sends me handwritten letters every week. I can tell they want me as much as anyone. I really appreciate it. I talk to him every day.”

Hollifield added, “Coach Muschamp, he’s really the only head coach that texts me every day.”

Linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler also plays an important role in recruiting Hollifield, who’s ranked as the No. 5 inside linebacker in the Class of 2018, according to the 247Sports composite.

“I love him. He’s my type of dude. He’ll get in your face and I love that. He gets the best out of his players. I love that about him,” Hollifield said.

During the visit, he hung out with a handful of 2018 targets, including 4-star linebacker Channing Tindall, 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge and 3-star defensive back Elijah Rodgers, who’s committed to Indiana.

South Carolina recruiting official visitors

The Gamecocks hosted three official visitors this past weekend: 3-star running back commitments Lavonte Valentine and Deshaun Fenwick and 4-star safety C.J. Smith.

Smith, a former Florida commitment, told Phil Kornblut that “everything went great.”

“The people, the atmosphere of the game, the coaching staff, it was all great,” Smith said. “Lot of good facilities. It bumps them up higher. None of my other visits should be better than South Carolina.”

The Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach, Fla.) prospect has official visits to Ole Miss and Oklahoma up next.

Specialist visitor

Buffalo transfer Taylor Sheets, who’s originally from Fort Mill (S.C.) High School, will relocate to South Carolina in January.

Coming out of high school in 2016, Sheets was ranked as the No. 24 kicker in the country, according to 247Sports.

Sheets’ brother-in-law, Jason Leventis, a former Wofford defensive back, is the youngest son of former South Carolina defensive lineman Andy Leventis.
