It didn’t take long for South Carolina offensive line coach Eric Wolford to identify the center he wanted to sign in 2018.
Hank Manos, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound state champion wrestler from Chapin (S.C.) High School was his guy.
On Tuesday, Manos reciprocated the Gamecocks interest and announced his commitment. SEC Country later caught up with Manos to discuss his pledge to South Carolina.
Did you wake up today and say I’m ready to do this? How did it play out for you?
Manos: “I’ve kind of been thinking over the last couple of days, almost going on a week now. It almost started after I took that last trip up to USC. I’d realized that my three criteria for picking a school: education, proximity to home and coaching – I kind of realized that USC was the best option for me in all three of those aspects.
“I kind of let it sit for a day, to make sure I was 100 percent on that, then this morning, I went and talked with (Chapin) coach (Justin) Gentry, then I called coach (Will) Muschamp and coach Wolf after school today.”
What did coach Muschamp and coach Wolf say when you called?
Manos: “They said they were very excited. They were very happy with my decision and they can’t wait to coach me for the next four years, which is great.”
The chances you’ve gotten to see coach Wolf work and get to know him, how much did that help in making this decision easier for you?
Manos: “It helped a ton. Anytime you can go up there and meet a guy, shake his hand, talk to him face-to-face, you realize what that guy is about and what kind of a coach he is. He’s not a coach who’s going to lie to you. He’s going to tell you how it is. That’s exactly what I was looking for.”
Did (2017 signee) Will Register ever give you any kind of a recruiting spiel?
Manos: “He didn’t. He basically realized it was my decision, which I respect. But he’s very happy. He just texted me a minute ago and he’s very happy that I chose to come play with him at USC.”
