Listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Israel Mukuamu is among the most intriguing prospects on South Carolina’s recruiting board in 2018. After a strong camp showing in July, the Gamecocks offered 3-star safety from Berkeley High School in Moncks Corner, S.C.
South Carolina hosted him on Saturday for the home opener against ECU.
“What stood out to me was the fans, they were amazing,” Mukuamu said. “Also, the love that they gave me. The best part was the intensity of the crowd and also visiting the locker room after the game, to talk to the players and coaches.”
The No. 36 ranked safety in the class of 2018 caught up with coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.
“They just asked me how am I doing and how’s the season going for me. Also, they were happy to see me and want me to visit again and stay in touch,” Mukuamu said.
He also chatted with cornerbacks Chris Lammons and JaMarcus King.
“I actually came up to them and told them that I liked the way they caught two key interceptions in the red zone to stop ECU from scoring,” Mukuamu said.
Clemson had Mukuamu on campus earlier this season. He also plans to visit Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Coastal Carolina and Charlotte.
Sewell talks visit
Jonathan Sewell, a 2019 running back from Clarke Central High School in Athens, Ga., picked up his offer from South Carolina in July.
The No. 63 ranked overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to 247Sports, Sewell was also on campus at South Carolina.
“The best parts when we were on the sideline watching pre-game and going into the locker room after the game,” he said.
Sewell liked what he saw from the Gamecocks running backs, who combined for 13 carries and 80 yards against the Pirates.
“I really like it. I really think I will fit right in with their run game,” Sewell said.
Later this fall, he’ll visit Auburn, Georgia and Charlotte.
Official visits in mind
Earlier this month, 3-star DT Romello Martin released his top 6, which included several SEC schools. The announcement came on the heels of a weekend visit to see South Carolina.
According to an interview Martin gave to Phil Kornblut, South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Miami will score official visits.
The 6-foot-2, 289-pound prospect from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. is ranked as the No. 26 defensive tackle in the class of 2017.
