For me anyway. Our D has some MAJOR issues. I know Gurley is a great back, but they were running multiple guys in there and they all seemed to pick up 4 or 5 yards a pop. I commented on last week from the UNC game but we STILL…after YEARS…are unable to get off the field in 3rd and long and even 4th and long situations. We allowed them to complete a 4th and long early in the game that led to a score. Then they converted on several 3rd and longs, the most notable being the 3rd and 13 and giving up the 85 yard TD. We may very well run into trouble at UT because it looks like they’ve found an offense.
I’m VERY disappointed in Jadeveon. I was concerned all summer about the effect all the hype would have and I really did not like it at all when he commented that he could see opposing QBs were afraid of him. Not only has he not been great in these first 2 contests, he’s really just been average. 1 sack and no outstanding plays to make note of. Yes, offenses are designing plays to avoid him as much as possible, but he really hasn’t even been getting into the backfield all that much, no matter where the play is going.
Mike Davis was the lone bright spot for me in this game, ripping off another huge run and turning in a solid all around performance. Connor had a good game, but killed us with that fumble. We were moving the ball well and had just converted on 4th down. A score there would have put us ahead with momentum. Absolutely killer.
Our return game is non-existent with Carson back there. Why he kept bringing them out of the end zone when he wasn’t making it to the 25 is beyond me.
Our coaching let us down in a big way in this one too. The play calling left a lot to be desired at times. Most notably, being in the shotgun on 4th and inches at the goal line.
Overall, we simply didn’t look ready for a big game. We knock Murray for failing to show in big games, but Shaw’s 4 losses have come against ranked teams on the road. Not gonna make it to Atl or further without fixing that.
We have lots to work on. Lots.
