Movement with Gamecock targets from South Florida

August 07, 2017

Official visitor in September

Four-star safety C.J. Smith has made arrangements for an official visit to South Carolina for the weekend of the Louisiana Tech game on Sept. 23, according to a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper this weekend.

The 6-foot-2, 193-pound 2018 prospect from Oxbridge Academy (West Palm Beach, Fla.) told reporters at the Miami Dolphins high school media day in Miami Gardens that he favored Oklahoma and Ole Miss.

Smith, who was once committed to Florida, has scheduled official visits to Oklahoma and Ole Miss during the month of October. Louisville also will host him in September.

More South Florida news

Three-star linebacker Rosendo Louis (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) told reporters at the Dolphins media day event he’ll announce a commitment on Aug. 18.

South Carolina, once deemed the favorite, doesn’t appear to be the landing spot when he declares. But that doesn’t mean the Gamecocks won’t have a shot to flip him their way at some point.

Florida State landed a pair of 247Sports Crystal Ball selections after his media day appearance.

South Carolina recruiting

Wide receiver Josh Vann is down to South Carolina and Georgia. A potential domino

Four-star wide receiver Kearis Jackson (Fort Valley, Ga.) doesn’t have South Carolina on his radar, but he is heavily considering Georgia, the Gamecocks’ top competition for fellow 4-star wide receiver Josh Vann.

In fact, Jackson is a heavy lean to his in-state school. All 18 of the predictions issued for him on the Crystal Ball are for Georgia. Landing his commitment on Aug. 19 won’t change the Dawgs’ plans for Vann. They want both 2018 prospects.

Where Vann ends up could ultimately depend on the move by 5-star quarterback Justin Fields, with whom he’s developed a strong rapport. If Fields ends up at Auburn, Florida State or anywhere else instead of Georgia, South Carolina’s chances with Vann get that much better.

IMG transfer

An interesting bit of news to come out of the Dolphins media day, via the Miami Herald, was that 4-star outside linebacker Mikel Jones has transferred from Mater Academy Charter School (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.) to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.).

That, potentially, could be bad news for South Carolina. In-state rival Clemson has a stronghold at IMG with two 2018 commitments already there: 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas and 4-star outside linebacker Mike Jones, both of whom have already signed financial aid agreements with the Tigers.

Speaking of Clemson

On Saturday afternoon, the Tigers offered defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway, a 2020 prospect from Conway (S.C.) High School, who was first offered by South Carolina in April.

Georgia, Maryland and North Carolina have also offered.

Hemingway is teammates at Conway with 2018 3-star lineman Raiqwon O’Neal, who will announce a commitment next week
