Movement with Lavonte Valentine, Jaycee Horn, B.T. Potter

May 30, 2017

Addressing team speed through recruiting remains a priority for South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp.

Three-star running back Lavonte Valentine, who recently listed the Gamecocks in his lead group, won the Florida 4A state championship in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.61 seconds. His best time of the season for East Ridge High School (Clermont, Fla.) was 10.44.

Valentine, who is 6-foot, 188 pounds, told Phil Kornblut earlier this week that he hopes to visit South Carolina on June 10.

“I just like the vibe the coaches at South Carolina give me,” Valentine said. “If you work hard enough I know they’ll let you start. They don’t care about age or he’s a senior or he’s a junior. They don’t care about that. And they’ll let me run track and my entire family is up in South Carolina.”

South Carolina running backs coach Bobby Bentley already lists one 2018 commitment, from 3-star running back Deshaun Fenwick of Braden River High School (Bradenton, Fla.). According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Fenwick is the No. 11 all-purpose back in the 2018 recruiting class. Valentine is two spots behind Fenwick at No. 13.

“Coach Bentley definitely wants me,” Valentine said. “The whole staff actually wants me. He’s saying I’m a very important factor for what they want to do and how they want to transform their offense.”

Valentine told Kornblut that he wanted to take official visits before making a decision.

After running track this spring for East Ridge, Valentine reportedly plans to transfer to Melbourne (Fla.) Central Catholic High School, where he played football last fall.

South Carolina leads, still with Horn

Four-star cornerback Jaycee Horn (Alpharetta, Ga.) continues to favor South Carolina over Alabama and Tennessee.

Horn, who is 6-foot, 174 pounds, quantified his interests during an interview with SEC Country reporter Chris Kirschner. The Gamecocks are at 100 percent, Horn said. The Tide stand at 90 percent and the Vols are at 85 percent.

Tennessee is scheduled to have Horn for a visit on June 17.

Don’t be surprised if there’s a shift in Horn’s interest after that trip to Knoxville. South Carolina must fend off what could be a heavy push by its SEC East rival. Horn’s close friend, 2018 wide receiver Jatavious Harris of Baldwin High School (Milledgeville, Ga.), is committed to the Vols.

No longer on the table?

On Monday, SEC Country wrote in SpursUp Surveillance that 2018 kicker B.T. Potter was planning to visit Florida on Saturday for specialists camp, instead of attending one at South Carolina.

Potter, of South Pointe High School (Rock Hill, S.C.), visited South Carolina multiple times during the fall and had planned to attend the Gamecocks specialists camp in hope of earning an offer. At this point, it’s probably safe to say both parties are heading in other directions.

Potter told TheClemsonInsider over the weekend that Clemson, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Florida, Oregon and Maryland are recruiting him the hardest, though none has offered yet.
