Muschamp, Gamecocks will waste little time before seeing top defensive line target

January 09, 2019

Winter Park, Fla. defensive tackle Jaquaze Sorrells is one of the top prospects remaining on South Carolina’s recruiting board for the 2019 class. The Under Armour All-American has narrowed his decision to the Gamecocks, Penn State and Alabama and Gamecock coach Will Muschamp plans to move quickly when the live period begins starting Friday.

Muschamp and Gamecock defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson plan to make their in-home visit with Sorrells and his mother on Sunday according to Winter Park High assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Kit Hill. The following weekend Sorrells will take his official visit to USC.

He also will take official visits to Penn State and Alabama the last two weekends of the month and then make his decision for the Feb. 6 signing day.

“He’s through with all the others,” Hill said. “He told me those are the three folks that care about me the most and that’s who I’m going with. I told two prominent programs today to forget about it. He’s happy with those three choices. Those three schools have maintained the relationships throughout the process. He’s a relationship kid. He’s going to go where he feels he fits in the best and has the best relationship with one of those coaches.”

Kitt said Robinson and Gamecock defensive line coach Lance Thompson have been down to see Sorrells. James Franklin and Nick Saban also are due in this month for their in home visits.

“He’s keeping everything close to the vest,” Kitt said. “I think he’s waiting until he gets there on the officials and sits down with people and sees what the place is about academically. I think he’s waiting to see the whole picture before saying this is this and that is that.”

Sorrells visit to USC this month will be be his fourth of this recruiting calendar. He was in for a camp and a recruiting event in the summer and was back for a game in September.

For his career, Sorrells totaled 178 tackles and 18 sacks according to stats by MaxPreps.
