Muschamp not locked into set timing in filling recruiting class
June 28, 2016
South Carolina has 17 football commitments. The Gamecocks’ class ranks in the Top 25 nationally.
It’s June.
With seven months until National Signing Day, head coach Will Muschamp is not ready to make a judgment one way or the other about the Gamecocks’ in-progress 2017 recruiting class.
“Signing day is in February. It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” Muschamp said. “Recruiting is a long duration.”
USC has had six commitments in June for the 2017 class, one of the most fruitful months on the recruiting trail for Muschamp since he was hired in December.
The Gamecocks for the 2016 cycle had six commits in December, seven in January and five in February as Muschamp and his staff furiously finished the “transition class” that included recruits who committed to Steve Spurrier.
USC is expected to sign a full class of 25 for 2017 with as many as 12 who could enroll in January, Muschamp said. Signing day falls this year on Wednesday, Feb 1.
As the recruiting process has accelerated in recent years, with prospects making commitments earlier and earlier, some staffs aim to have half or 75 percent of a class complete before football season begins. That’s not the case with Muschamp.
There is no magic number or percentage to be at come September, he said.
“It’s about signing the best players,” Muschamp said. “If it happens on signing day, great. If it happens in December and they enroll in January, great. We never look at trying to get a guy to commit if we don’t know if we’ll get the guy or not.”
