Fresh off an exhilarating 13-10 comeback victory in his first game as the head coach at South Carolina, Will Muschamp was adamant about the future; not of his team, but of his program.
Regardless if the Gamecocks (1-0, 1-0) had won or fallen short against Vanderbilt, a bigger goal is in focus.
Muschamp has put a task in front of him much bigger than winning one game on the road. He’s trying to rebuild a program and trying to form a culture in which every day is about winning, not just Saturdays (and an occasional Thursday) in the fall.
“I’m really optimistic where we’re headed, like over the top optimistic where we’re headed,” Muschamp said. “Excited about where we are? I’m real excited about where we’re headed because it’s just going to get better.”
From an eye-opening winter workout program, an installation-heavy spring season, a hard-working summer, and a physical fall camp, Muschamp said his players realized what they bought in to from January to September was worth it.
“They got to experience the win and the belief factor starts for you a little bit more as a coach, [they think] maybe these guys do know what they’re talking about,” Muschamp said. “So I think all of those things will start to snowball moving forward.”
Will there be tough times ahead for the Gamecocks? Of course, said Muschamp. What he is trying to instill in his players though is preparation from Sunday through Friday makes adversity on Saturdays that much easier for a program to handle.
“Are we going to have some bumps in the road? Absolutely, 100 percent, maybe in Starkville, I don’t know. But it’s not about that,” Muschamp said. “It’s about Friday and Saturday and Sunday and Monday and the preparation our guys put in every single day and buying in to the intangible things it takes to have a good program, not a good team, a good program.”
What’s a good team if that success does not spill over into the offseason and the season after that?
“That’s what we want to have here, a good program that over a period of time can go through tough times and survive those times and move on to the next situation,” Muschamp said. “So yeah I’m really excited about the guys in the locker room but it’s about the program as well.”
