My take on the Defense

I have heard a lot of complaints about how our D did on Saturday. I saw a feel missed tackles just like everyone else, but I also saw some good stuff.

I saw UNC get shut down in the red zone 3 times and have to kick FG's. After those 2 TD drives I saw our D make them go 3 and out and save some clock for us to get a chance to win it.

As far as the two 90+ yards TD's, I saw 2 mistakes... 1. Horn missed that INT. Still can't figure that out.       2. I think it was Roderick that left that receiver wide open because he thought the QB was running. Other than that, every receiver was covered good, it was just 5 or 6 great passes by that freshman that only his receivers could get; the one handed TD for example. But even after giving up those 2 TD's, they shut them down again at the end of the 4th to get the ball back with some time. Regrettably our O, our QB, and our OC let them down.

I really don't see why so many seem upset with our D. Had we scored again no one would really think about it much. They would be glad the D stopped them that last drive and got us the ball back with some time.

I saw room for improvement, but i wasn’t extremely upset with the defense.

My biggest issues were poor tackling, again, and we didn’t get in the backfield as much as I thought we should with the inexperienced O line of UNC.  Had the offense stayed on the field longer, none if it would have been an issue, as you said.

When I think of our defense, the Dolphins' No Name Defense of the 70's comes to mind.

There were no big names on their defense, but they still got it done on game day for Don Shula.

With us, we have had the talent, but they are the No Name Defense because they haven't really done anything over the years.

The No Name Defense.

Our DBs and LBs are telegraphing every play which way they are going to go by their placement of their feet or body positioning. It was terrible and unc young QB was reading them out with ease. Again, we cant tackle or take good angles and or DEs didn't do much.

A defense is aided by a consistent running game and no turnovers that keeps them off the field and more fresh.

I'll agree with this.  Also, we don't disguise bringing pressure very well.  Overall we lost the trenches battle and that can't continue if we're going to turn the season around.

I don't understand how anybody could NOT be angry about the defense....we got SHREDDED by UNC! I'm sorry, but the defense was atrocious once the chips were down, and the players looked gassed and out of place. I don't get me started on the bad angles, poor tackling, and poor scheme. Yes, the redzone D was decent, but where's the win in that?

I still think CWM has way too many hard practices. Like EvilChick stated, we looked tired and gassed. You just don't go full bore every practice during the season. Its takes too much toll on the body and the mind. The players can heal and rest properly in my book.

Maybe that’s a good as they can be right now?  Is the DL as deep and talented as we were lead to believe?  DBs as good?  I didn’t see much proof of it.   I’m sure we will vs a far inferior opponent this weekend but certainly not last week.  Consistently beat, pushed around and missed tackles.

Sadly, they might look fine Saturday, but next week is where we will see them against some of the best. I just hope this week they will learn where they need to work to fix anything that is not right yet.

2 weeks ago I thought we could upset Bama. And, I still feel if our guys could play up to their caliber, they could still pull out a win but it will take a world of difference from last week. I just hope they don't blow us out
