National writer projects Gamecock basketball to make NCAA Tournament

Sept. 16, 2019

Coming out of SEC media day last October, Andy Katz, after being around Frank Martin, made a bold prediction. The NCAA.com college basketball writer had South Carolina making some form of the postseason.

The Gamecocks, in Katz’s mind, were going to exceed expectations placed on them by the preseason SEC poll.

“I’m not always easily swayed,” Katz posted Oct. 17, 2018, “but when you spend time with Frank Martin and look at the roster, you’ll see that the Gamecocks should not have been predicted to finish 11th. I could see South Carolina finishing higher. Four starters are back. And Chris Silva is a conference player of the year possibility. There is no way Martin is finishing out of the postseason. Don’t see it at all.”

Certainly have positive expectations for this iteration under Coach Martin. Hopefully there's no injury issues, the team gels quickly at the start of the season, and we have a better non-conference result than what we had last season. Which will be a task because I understand we have a pretty tough non-conf. slate, but then had things gone like they should've last season (Silva starting stronger, Minaya and others not getting injured, Couisnard being allowed to play), we would've done much better in non-conf. last season than we did.....

What am I missing here, the Andy Katz reference in the OP was talking about last years team?  And was completely wrong about that prediction.

AJ rolled his right ankle in the ARK game and missed three weeks.

Then he rolled his left one in the practice prior to the SECT game against AUB.

We would have blown the lid off of the CLA if he hadn't gotten hurt and we beat the Hogs that game.

The team would have been in the NCAAT last year if he could have stayed healthy, but it was obviously beyond his control.

We've definitely got a chance this year if we can stay injury free.

I really like to make up of this team.

I wasn't really happy with Hinson for leaving the team during last season when we obviously needed every available player for 5-on-5 practices or close to it.

His health issues are probably legit and I hope he does well at Austin Peay playing for Matt Figger, but I am glad he's not in our program anymore.

Listen to CFM on the radio last week and you can tell he thinks he has something good cooking with the basketball team. Been a long time since I was excited about BB.

We have the best line-up we have ever had and Frank looks to be his old self.

We gonna kick it.
