News, notes and observations from Friday’s Will Muschamp Camp June 17, 2017
COLUMBIA, S.C.– Will Muschamp was all smiles as Friday’s camp session began.
The South Carolina head coach has plenty to be happy about, starting with the 11 a.m. commitment from 2017 3-star CB Tavyn Jackson. An hour earlier, 5-star DE Xavier Thomas arrived for Muschamp’s camp.
Thomas walked into the Gamecocks indoor facility on Friday morning decked out in garner and black. Listed by 247Sports as the No. 1 in-state prospect for the 2018 class, Thomas is visiting South Carolina with his mother and several teammates from Wilson High School (Florence).
Led by defensive line coach Lance Thompson, members of the South Carolina coaching staff stopped to speak with Thomas as he went through the camp registration.
Several former South Carolina quarterbacks are back for the Elite Quarterback Camp, which has over 40 participants. Included among the former Gamecock signal callers are Todd Ellis, Erik Kimrey, Phil Petty, Dondrial Pinkins and Steve Taneyhill.
Perhaps the top quarterback visitor on Friday is 2018 North Carolina commitment James Foster, who’s on campus from Lanier High School (Montgomery, Ala.).
Coaches from Central Michigan were spotted inside the practice building, speaking with members of the South Carolina strength and conditioning staff.
Edisto High School (S.C.) also has its team on campus for Friday’s camp.
