Two of the most prominent coaches in SEC football are back at it again—after a slight delay.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban responded to criticism from South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier on Tuesday.
If you recall, the Head Ball Coach took a shot at Saban in April:
He’s got a nice little gig going, a little bit like (John) Calipari. He tells guys, "Hey, three years from now, you’re going to be a first-round pick and go." If he wants to be the greatest coach or one of the greatest coaches in college football, to me, he has to go somewhere besides Alabama and win, because they’ve always won there at Alabama.
Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show (via CoachingSearch.com), Saban fired back at the Head Ball Coach and landed a knockout blow:
LSU wasn’t winning when I went there. Michigan State wasn’t winning when I went there. Toledo wasn’t winning when I went there. And Alabama really wasn’t winning when I came here. I guess I gotta go someplace else.
Both coaches are absolutely accurate.
Saban does have a "nice little gig" at Alabama, even though there's nothing little about being the head coach at Alabama.
Saban's counterpunch landed, but that doesn't mean that this fight is over.
Even though the season is about to start, this type of banter is fun for the fans as long as the participants don't cross that imaginary line.
Spurrier has never been afraid to speak his mind, and while SEC commissioner Mike Slive may not like the coaches going after each other if it's mean-spirited, I don't get the impression that this is a mean-spirited debate.
They're having fun and being entertaining, and more coaches should follow suit.
Keep it up, gentlemen.
