The University is apparently mulling over a new rebranding effort which would take place in 2014. And if I'm reading between the lines correctly, it could include an new/additional logo or word mark.

When discussing the "nickname" they mean how people refer to the University of South Carolina in shorthand, ie: USC, Carolina, SC, etc.

Here are some key highlights:

  • A "top university leader" wants to distance us from "USC" and "Carolina."
  • Historically we've been called "South Carolina" and "SC."
  • The University of South Carolina’s vice president for communications launched a major branding campaign for the school last month. She had conversations about changing USC’s nickname with then-athletics director Eric Hyman before he left for Texas A&M this summer. He had no concerns about the “South Carolina” name but decided against developing a stylized Gamecocks logo — something like the Texas Longhorns steer.
  • “We want to create a new set of traditions,” she said. She prefers “South Carolina” or “SC” because they are more distinctive.

Before anyone gets too worked up, I don't think they are suggesting that we won't or can't refer to ourselves as Carolina or USC, and I don't think they would stop using the Block-C logo.

My takeaway is that the whole "SC" logo battle between us and So.Cal may have been in part due to the University wanting to emphasize "SC" on multiple levels. It's a great logo, but it could have supported a rebranding effort.

I don't care for the tone of the article, because to me it reads as though they are telling me what I should call my university, and as though they wouldn't use "Carolina" or "USC" in an official capacity anymore.

I take no issue with calling my university "South Carolina," though I almost never refer to us in that way.
