Nigeria native Chris Akporoghene visits for camp

Chris Akporoghene, one of the most intriguing linemen in the Class of 2019, made the trek from Tennessee to South Carolina in June with a handful of the top prospects from the Volunteer State. And the visit made an impact.
The 6-foot-5, 275-pound native of Nigeria, an offensive tackle at The King’s Academy in Seymour, Tenn., spent the day working out with offensive line coach Eric Wolford.
“I still remember everything there, because there were some things that I didn’t know about before, and I learned from there. And I’m 100 percent sure it’s going to help my game, so I’m really, really upbeat about going there,” Akporoghene said. “I really like South Carolina. It’s a cool place. It feels like home out there.”
Akporoghene has four offers in all: South Carolina, Memphis, West Virginia and Yale.
“I think [Wolford is] a good coach because he has a way of teaching kids how to get better at their game,” Akporoghene said. “He has the patience to show you what you’re missing and what you need to do to get better, so I think he’s a good coach. I like him.”
Akporoghene went into further detail about the highlights of his visit.
“I just was surprised. I didn’t really think it was that big. I was really impressed,” he said. “I got to see the campus, the rooms, the field and the weight room. I also got to meet the strength and conditioning coach [Jeff Dillman]. He was a great guy. He showed me a lot of things that I always thought were going to be hard to do, but he showed me it’s just about technique, how to get better.”
Alabama, Clemson and Tennessee are among the other schools that are expressing interest in Akporoghene. He already has a strong sense of what to look for as a recruit, even though he’s still new to the game. The 2017 season will be just his second playing football.
“The major thing is finding a program that fits for you,” he said. “That’s something that I’m actually looking at. … There’s a lot of good programs, but just getting the right fit for me, that’s what I’m looking at. So right now, I’m just trying to get to know all of the coaches where I go to, so I can find the right fit for the kind of football I play.”
According to 247Sports, Akporoghene is the No. 36 offensive tackle in the Class of 2019.
