LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Kyle Davis, the top-ranked wide receiver in the country, backed off his commitment to South Carolina in May and vowed to shut down his recruitment to the media and even college coaches.
After two months, the 38th-ranked player is slowly getting back into the process but still wants to keep recruiting on the back burner.
"I shut down my recruiting because I wanted to enroll early,” said Davis, from Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia. "Getting my academics in order and getting everything ready for me to graduate early is more important to me than the recruiting part.
“I mean, I’ve still been looking at schools, and I will make my decision probably around midseason. I actually don’t talk to many coaches, though. I try to refrain from talking to a lot of coaches because it becomes overwhelming, and I’m not trying to get into that again. I shut it down a lot lately. I don’t think they believed me when I said it, but now they believe it.”
Despite slowing the process down, Davis concedes there are a few coaches he still keeps in contact with, including Kevin Beard from Miami, Bryan McClendon from Georgia, Zach Azzanni from Tennessee, Dameyune Craig from Auburn and Geoff Collins from Florida.
Davis hasn’t made a decision about the official visits he will take, but there will be specific factors he will consider when evaluating each of his favorite schools.
"Their sports medicine program and mass communications programs, because that’s what I plan to major and minor in and that’s a big aspect for me,” Davis said. "My father is a principal, and that’s a big thing to me; he’s been on me since I was in grade school. I also just want to go where it feels like home. Football doesn’t last forever.”
Despite backing off his commitment to South Carolina, Davis said the Gamecocks are still among the schools he is considering.
