PENDLETON, S.C. – Four-star defensive end Brad Johnson 6'3" 230lbs (Pendleton, S.C.) announced on signing day that he will stay in the state of South Carolina to play college football.

Johnson will sign with South Carolina over Virginia Tech. Listed by the 247Sports as the No. 3 overall prospect in South Carolina, Johnson joins OrTre Smith and Shi Smith – the top-two players from the state for 2017 – as Gamecock signees.

“He’s a defensive playmaker,” Pendleton coach Paul Sutherland told SEC Country last summer. “Very powerful. Again, his ability to pursue, run down the ball just like all the great ones, but his explosiveness and ability to run is just so imminent.”

Johnson continues what already has been a great morning for the Gamecocks and their 2017 class. Johnson is the third defensive lineman of the day to commit to South Carolina.

Earlier this morning, Jones County (Miss.) Junior College defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw recommitted to the Gamecocks, while Tucker (Ga.) defensive lineman Aaron Sterling and Hollywood (Fla.) South Broward offensive tackle Jordon Carty committed to South Carolina.

Coach Will Muschamp said on ESPNU he is “really pleased” with the start to the day for the Gamecocks.

“We really like where we are,” Muschamp said. “It has been a lot less dramatic than it was last signing day. We kinda knew going in where we were and where we stood with some young men.

“We are really pleased with the day so far.”
