One of North Carolina’s top prospects will be at USC Friday and the Gamecocks are in serious contention for him at this point.  DE Matthew Butler 6'4" 260lbs of Garner has narrowed his focus to USC, NC State, Duke, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UNC, Penn State and Alabama.  All but Alabama have offered.

He has visited North Carolina, NC State and Duke several times since they’re so close by and is looking forward to getting to the others on his list and that includes USC.  He said most of his family will join him in Columbia.

“I was interested in Coach Muschamp and have been following him because of his successes, and even his mishaps, and seeing how he developed defensive players and how he coached defensive players,” Butler said.  “I talk to Coach Muschamp a lot. Even though we haven’t known each other for about two or three months, we talk a good bit.  And I talk to Coach Thompson.”

Butler said the Gamecocks like him for defensive end though they understand he could grow into a tackle.  He’s coming off a torn meniscus injury and if his doctor clears him this week he would like to workout for the Gamecocks Friday.

Butler is going to Tennessee Saturday and plans to visit Penn State and Alabama in July.  He won’t visit Texas A&M until his official visit.  In fact, he plans to use most of his official visits for the out of state schools.  He is not enrolling early so he’s not going to rush a decision and there is no leader at this point.

Last season Butler had 70 tackles with 10 sacks and 40 quarterback hits.
