USC Fined $25,000 for Storming the Court

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The University of South Carolina has been fined $25,000 because fans stormed the court following Saturday's Kentucky game.

The Southeastern Conference issued the penalty Monday.

Gamecock fans ran onto the court in the seconds following the Gamecocks men basketball team's 72-67 win over the Wildcats. A public address announcer had asked fans not to go out of the stands in the waning moments of the game. The school's athletics Twitter accounts also sent out a similar message.

The video of the incident made national sports shows.

In 2004, the SEC came up with a commissioner regulation saying spectators cannot enter the competition area in an effort to ensure safety. A penalty for a first offense is $5,000; it's $25,000 for a second offense, and a third time is $50,000. The penalty is at the discretion of the commissioner.

If a school doesn't have a violation for three years, their next violation is considered a second offense.

USC fans last stormed the court in 2010, coincidentally, during another men's basketball win over Kentucky.

Since I was in the arena that night, I have a video of that somewhere on my backup server.

If I can find it, I'll post it here.

Didn't know we were alone on this.. shameful
