Listening to a few local sports shows, especially Corey Millers, I have been hearing ideas about hiring an offensive coordinator. Personally, I don’t ever see Spurrier going for it, however IMO it makes sense. I believe Spurrier will leave within the next 5 years and it would be nice to have a coach in waiting. Corey Miller suggested hiring a high profile OC and let him have the offense. He makes some good great points. Any thoughts?

I don’t see Spurrier ever bringing in an OC, high-profile or otherwise.

The problem (potentially) with a “head coach in waiting” is that (a) they will only wait so long if they’re worth a HC gig and (

you limit yourself in pursuing the best available coach(es) whenever Spurrier decides to retire.

If you bring in a high-profile coach they will want to name their own OC and DC, though consideration would certainly be given to an incumbent OC or DC who is on the opposite side as the incoming HC’s “specialty”. Most all head coaches are considered either offensive minded or defensive minded. The incumbent DC would be SOL if you bring in a defensive minded HC, just as an incumbent OC would likely be SOL if you bring in an offensive minded HC.

Not worth worrying too much about until Spurrier decides to retire, though. I don’t see Spurrier retiring before we win (at least) an SEC championship or until he’s here another 2 or 3 years, whichever comes first.
