Offered QB recaps Day 1; more prospects arrive from Florida; official visit updates
June 06, 2018
Buford (Ga.) High School quarterback Aaron McLaughlin is among the handful of Class of 2021 prospects already on the South Carolina recruiting radar.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect camped with the Gamecocks on Tuesday for Day 1 of the Will Muschamp Football Camp.
South Carolina offered in January while he was on campus. Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Ole Miss, Penn State, Southern Cal and Texas A&M also have offered. There are others, plenty of them.
After his camp stop on Tuesday, McLaughlin tweeted that he “really felt the love today at South Carolina. Another great time in Columbia. I could really see myself here.”
In an interview with SEC Country, McLaughlin gave a nice review of quarterbacks coach Dan Werner, who’s entering his first season at South Carolina.
“He’s a players’ coach. He is very smart and calm. He knows what he’s doing,” McLaughlin said.
Werner told McLaughlin that he “threw well.”
“I’m just glad I got to get back up and work with these coaches,” McLaughlin said.
Because he believes South Carolina’s “program is really on the rise,” it helps the Gamecocks’ chances, especially early in the recruiting process.
“Obviously, they have a great tradition, but they are getting back on top,” McLaughlin said. “I also like the school. The coaches are awesome. The fan base is great. The new facilities will be crazy. It’s just a great place to be right now.”
Trips to Auburn and Arkansas are on deck. Ole Miss hosted him for a visit last Saturday.
More Tampa area prospects
A bus load of prospects from the Tampa area camped at South Carolina on Day 1 of Muschamp Camp. Another round is due in for Day 2.
This haul is being chartered by Unsigned Preps, an organization that’s taken Tampa-area prospects to college campuses for eight straight summers. There are Unsigned Preps bus tour alums at several Power 5 schools, including Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Miami. A few are now in the NFL.
The next wave of Unsigned Preps arrived at South Carolina on Tuesday night. They’ll camp with the Gamecocks on Wednesday. Below are a few of the prospects SEC Country will have an eye on:
Official visit updates
Earlier this week, SEC Country reported that 4-star defensive end Dante Walker (Riverdale, Ga.) will take an official visit to South Carolina this weekend. That plan has been scratched. Walker is still slated to be on campus Saturday, but it will be for an unofficial visit.
Jaden Davis, a 4-star cornerback from St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) will not take an official visit to South Carolina this weekend. Instead, he’ll take an official visit to Kentucky.
