South Carolina’s pursuit of another 2017 offensive line commitment really ramped up Sunday when 4-star T.J. Moore pulled the plug on his commitment.
Three-star tackle Jerry Drake Jr., the Gamecocks first official visitor under Muschamp’s watch, could wind up filling the spot.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound standout from Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High School enjoyed his weekend in Columbia.
“It was great. I liked it. I liked what they had to offer. I liked the campus, the people on the campus and the coaching staff,” Drake said. “I really liked everything about it.”
Tennessee will host him over the weekend for official visit No. 2. For now, it’s the only other one on his schedule.
Drake will have to act quickly since he’s graduating from high school in about two months. The plan, for now, is to wait until December before reaching a decision.
Just more than a week removed from the trip to Columbia, South Carolina remains in strong position.
While on campus, he spoke with “pretty much everybody. The whole coaching staff, the players.”
That, of course, included Muschamp.
“He’s a great guy,” Drake said. “He’s really enthusiastic. He pointed out the things that he did wrong, which is good. He wants to make sure you fix your mistakes.”
Drake also thinks the Gamecocks are headed in the right direction, despite their 2-4 record.
“I think, in the future, they’re going to do a lot better,” he said. “You’ve got to think, right now, they have a lot of freshman playing … over time, I think the team is going to get a lot better.”
While on campus, Drake took a look at South Carolina’s engineering department, which is an important part of the equation.
“I’m really an academic kid, so I’ve got to look at the engineering program,” he said. “I’ve got to look at the academic parts. Just the school as a whole.”
Skinny: Word out of Knoxville is that Tennessee is running out of room in its 2017 offensive line haul. Interestingly enough, Moore is among those vying for the remaining spots. South Carolina is believed to be in strong position.
