OL John Simpson 6'4" 296lbs of Fort Dorchester made a trip up to Tennessee for a camp on Friday as he continued to check off the visits to schools he’s considering. He camped at Clemson and Alabama in June and this Friday he will be at USC’s pool party for priority recruits.
“I had a blast,” Simpson said of his day with the Vols. “Coach Mahoney coached me up really nice. I just love getting coached up really nice. And the facilities were amazing. Coach (Butch) Jones and I talked before I left. He said they really wanted me. They’ve only got one more offensive line position open. He said, ‘you got to do the right thing at the right time.’ He was trying to say they are going to win a national championship. That’s kind of pressure, a lot of pressure, but I just want to take it slow.”
Simpson hasn’t visited the Gamecocks since the football season so he’s anxious to get back to Columbia and hear what his recruiters have to say to him.
“I just want to spend more time with the coaches because that’s really what I want to do on my next visits coming up,” Simpson said. “I want to spend more time with the coaches to see where they are as people to see if they are filling me up with lies and stuff like that. I don’t really mean like, “lies.” No one does.”
Simpson said he’s not sure of where his next visits will be after USC. He still wants to get to LSU and he wants to make a return trip to Georgia.
Simpson has had Clemson holding a tenuous advantage over the others since his camping stop there, but after seeing Tennessee, he’s not so sure about things again.
“I don’t know, Tennessee opened my eyes a lot,” he said. He did agree that Clemson, Tennessee and USC stand out with him right now but he doesn’t want to call them absolute favorites. He’s now not expecting to make a decision until sometime during his season.
