OL Tony Gray remembers ‘good vibe’ he got from South Carolina visit

GRAYSON, Ga. – Grayson offensive tackle Tony Gray took a break from recruiting visits and most of the recruiting process during the recent high school football season.
But South Carolina still remained in the recruiting mix for him. A pair of USC coaches visited Gray and he visited South Carolina for its game against Tennessee in late October.
“It was a tight game,” Gray said. “It was a good vibe down there at South Carolina.”
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Gray said he mostly put his recruitment on the shelf during the season in order to focus on winning a state title. He and his teammates accomplished that last weekend when they defeated Roswell in overtime at the Georgia Dome to claim the Georgia 7A championship.
“I never made it this far in my high school career to where I’m at now,” Gray said last week prior to the state title game. “It’s a blessing to be at this point and play for something you came for. … I would actually cry because we worked so hard during the summer time. That would be a blessing to get a ring.”
With his season behind him, Gray’s focus will turn back toward his recruitment. He will play in the Under Armour All-American Game, then take some officials visits. He doesn’t have schools in mind that he wants to visit yet, but South Carolina is working to be in the picture.
Gamecocks wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon and former offensive line coach Shawn Elliott – now the Georgia State head coach – visited Elliott in early December.
“We talked a lot about the school and about life things and stuff like that, as well as making the best decision for me and my family,” Gray said. “The relationships, we are just getting back to talking and everything. We are building and talking.”
Gray, who also has offers from Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and many more, said more schools now are starting to look to visit him and have in-home visits.
And while the Gamecocks continue to battle for his commitment, Gray does have a teammate in his ear as Grayson defensive back Jamyest Williams is a South Carolina commit.
“Jamyest, he tells us, we have to do what we have to do,” Gray said. “It’s all a business at the end of the day. It’s what fits for you. He kinda says little things, putting it out there and saying it’s a good opportunity and stuff like that.”
