4-star 2019 OT (and cousin of Gamecocks coach) recaps visit

While Warren McClendon was back at South Carolina on Saturday for the second time this season, the 4-star offensive tackle caught up with his cousin, Gamecocks co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.

A 2019 prospect from Brunswick (Ga.) High School, McClendon said he had a “good” visit.

“Probably how the fans were still into the game, even though they were losing,” he said when asked what stood out.

Along with his cousin, McClendon caught up with offensive line coach Eric Wolford.

“[Wolford was] just saying I need to get back up there on a visit and visit during spring,” he said.

The 6-foot-5, 280-pound junior also visited for the Vanderbilt game and worked out during one of the lineman camps this summer. At camp, he got a chance to work alongside Wolford, who’s wrapping up his first season in stint No. 2 with the Gamecocks.

“I like him a lot,” McClendon said. “He’s teaching his players and I really like him.”

The South Carolina program, as a whole, has shown signs of progress to McClendon, who’s ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 20 offensive tackle in the Class of 2019.

“They’ve had a good season and a big improvement from past years,” he said.

Alabama and Georgia each hosted him this season for a game. All three schools have offered, to go along with Auburn and Clemson.

Though McClendon doesn’t claim a leader or list any favorites, he wants to get back to each of those schools in the not-too-distant future.

“I don’t have a decision date and I know that I’m going to be narrowing it down in a little bit, in a couple of months,” he said.

Several factors will be considered.

“The education, the coaching staff and the college atmosphere,” McClendon said.

Still on the table

Three-star athlete Bryce Thompson wants to graduate early from Dutch Fork High School (Irmo, S.C.). The former Virginia Tech commitment says that “as of right now” he knows which four-year college he wants to attend.

Because Thompson entered his senior year with work to do academically, his first step out of high school could be to a junior college.

“My goal is to start my freshman year and be a true freshman, so we’re still deciding if I want to graduate early or not,” he said, during an interview with during an interview with Phil Kornblut of sportstalksc.com.

Among the four-year schools that could be an option is Marshall. And along with South Carolina, where he was Saturday for one of several Gamecocks games he has taken in, Thompson is also considering North Carolina State and Virginia Tech, where he was once committed.

“It’s still the same but you never know, it’s still a long time until signing day and a lot can change,” Thompson said. “But, as of right now, I still know where I’m going.”

New 2018 offer

Christian Barmore added an offer from South Carolina last weekend.

The No. 28 defensive tackle in the Class of 2018 is from Neumann Goretti High School in Philadelphia. Now a 4-star prospect, Barmore began his senior season with a 2-star rating, according to pennlive.com. Once committed to Temple, Barmore now has offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Miami.
